Black Maternal Health · High-Risk Pregnancy · Birthworker Support
Your story hasn't ended.
It's just written differently
than you planned.
The MotherHand Project is the go-to hub for Black maternal health, high-risk and bed-rested birthers, NICU families, postpartum warriors, and the birthworkers who hold them all. Rooted in lineage. Built for today. Unapologetically yours.
Still Your Story
Built for the rooms
nobody prepared you for.
The medical system was not built with you in mind. The resources weren't either. Still Your Story is the ecosystem we needed and couldn't find — workbooks, journals, interactive digital hubs, and self-care guides created specifically for Black birthers and BIPOC families.
Not generic wellness content. Not one-size-fits-all advice. Resources that see you — your body, your culture, your specific kind of exhaustion — and meet you exactly where you are.
"Joy is not the reward for healing. Joy is part of how you get there. And you deserve both — right now, exactly as you are, with everything you are still carrying."
Whether you're on bed rest, moving through the postpartum season, sitting beside a NICU isolette, or just trying to hold yourself together — there is something here built for exactly where you are.
Our Founder · Her Why
A Mother. A Warrior. A woman who was not heard — and decided to become the voice she needed.
Healed enough
to reach back.
Lesely Sharp-Wood, LMT · The Doula Nubia · Founder
Over thirty years ago, I was the woman in the room who wasn't heard. I navigated a high-risk pregnancy without the language, the tools, or the support to understand what was happening to my body. I survived PMAD at a time when nobody was naming it — certainly not for Black women. I became a mother three times over, each time carrying more than a child. I carried fear, isolation, and a medical system that consistently asked me to make myself smaller.
"I didn't burn. I didn't break. I got quiet — and then I got to work."
Healing was not a straight line. It was decades of learning, unlearning, and finally arriving at a place where I could look back and see the road clearly enough to light it for someone else. That is when this work began — not as a business plan, but as a calling.
I am a Licensed Massage Therapist, Certified Prenatal Massage Therapist, and Trauma-Informed Somatic Postpartum Practitioner. Every tool I am building is something I didn't have — and someone else needs right now.
Coming Soon · A Memoir in Verse
"You Don't Hear Me"
A poetic journey through the medical system — what it feels like to be a Black woman whose body is speaking and no one is listening. Thirty years of experience and the healing that followed.
My Why
"I am not here to save anyone. I am here because I know what it feels like to have no one holding the map — and I found my way through anyway. If these tools, these words, these resources reach one woman who feels alone in a hospital bed at 2am wondering if anyone sees her — then this is worth everything."
Rooted in Advocacy · Built on Lineage
Your body is not the crisis.
The system is.
Black women have been birthing through impossible odds since before anyone thought to document it. We built The MotherHand Project because the data is damning and the silence is deafening. Being Black and pregnant in America is still, in 2026, an act of courage.
You should not have to fight to be believed, fight to be seen, and fight for your baby — all in the same appointment. We are here to give you language, tools, and a community that already knows your name.
Know Your Rights
You have the right to a second opinion, an interpreter, a support person, and to refuse any intervention.
Trust Your Body
Black women's pain is chronically undertreated. Your instincts are data. Advocate loudly and often.
Carry the Lineage
Every woman who came before you survived. You carry that strength in your cells.
"The most revolutionary thing a Black woman can do is survive this system — and then turn around and build something better for the one behind her."
— The MotherHand Project"When your birth story appears to have changed — know this: you are still the author. The chapter is different. The story is still yours."
— Still Your StoryWho This Is For

Your pregnancy just got complicated
You walked in expecting routine and left with a diagnosis, a specialist, and a fear you can't name yet. We have tools, words, and a whole community for exactly this moment.
